We Celebrate Women in the Tea Industry

Tomorrow is International Women’s Day, and we wouldn’t have tea without women! Traditionally, women represent the majority of tea pickers. However, according to Ethical Tea Partnership, only 14.6% of managerial positions were held by women in India in 2019.

That’s why we are proud to partner with Doke Tea Estate. This family-run tea farm aims to employ and empower women and to eventually be the first estate run entirely by women.

Neha Lochan runs the factory, develops teas, and organizes schooling for the children on the estate. She plans to start an NGO to help children in the foothill areas get an education more easily and improve their daily life.

Neha is also exploring making new handmade teas for the tea connoisseur, and is especially interested in making a smoked tea and a yellow tea. We carry three of Doke Estate’s handcrafted teas. Watch Neha’s introduction to the estate’s teas below.

Doke Black Fusion Tea is a particularly complex tea. The initial flavor has a fruit sweetness which is followed by an earthy finish.

Doke Silver Needles Indian White Tea is a unique offering not often found. It has the floral notes we look for in a white tea as well as that distinctive character present in fine teas from the finer regions of Northern India. This is produced early in the Spring about the time as the 1st Flush.

Doke Estate Rolling Thunder Oolong Tea brews a softly sweet cup with the slight astringency you would expect from a first flush tea. It’s sold out now, but we expect a fresh batch soon.
