Anyone who has ever been to a tea party where half the guests are stuffed knows tea isn’t just for grown ups. Kids can enjoy and benefit from tea as well. Still, the vast majority of regular tea drinkers are adults, so how do you introduce your kids to tea? Here are some suggested do’s and don’ts to get you started.
Do use tea as a way to replace fruit juices. The sugar content in tea is much lower, and it doesn’t contain preservatives and color additives like a lot of pre-packaged drinks.
Don’t choose caffeinated. An Aged Earl Grey or black tea may not be the best choice for a young child, especially if they are already chock-full of energy.
Do host a tea party, or encourage your kids to throw one. It’s a fun way to share tea that will have you spending quality time together. Making an event out of is much more exciting and memorable. We even have fun tea sets for children.
Don’t let your tea get too hot or too strong! If you’re brewing a cup for a little one, make sure it’s not piping hot. Bring the temperature down, or drop in a few ice cubes to make sure it’s safe. You may also want to steep the tea for a shorter amount of time than you would for an adult, to dilute some of the taste and make it more palatable for a tot.
Do choose fruity flavors. Some adults can enjoy, and even love, a tea with an earthier taste. However, kids are more likely to be drawn to sweet drinks, like our current featured herbal infusion Organic Pink Lemonade Rooibos.
Remember to take full advantage of all tea has to offer. Use it to soothe a child’s sore throat or to settle an upset stomach. A warm cup of herbal infusion right before bed can also help reduce anxiety and work as an all-natural sleep aid.
