Take Your Hot Toddy to the Next Level

The hot toddy is a classic winter drink, but that doesn’t mean there’s just one way to make it. According to Tea Magazine, it usually involves brandy or bourbon, hot water and some kind of sweetener. There’s no wrong way to approach what’s become a “comfort cocktail,” but one thing is definitely true: using premium loose leaf tea will help you take your hot toddy to the next level. Whether you’re unwinding during a holiday party, fighting off the flu or trying to take the edge off while relatives are visiting, there’s no use in mixing up this cocktail if you’re not doing it with the best tea. Here’s a great recipe that’s technically a hot cider. We love it because it’s a great excuse to indulge in some Darjeeling, the champagne of teas. Looking for more variations on hot toddies? Darjeeling Cider

I love the combination of Darjeeling and Apples, but feel free to use your favorite black or high oxidation oolong in this Hot Toddy.  This recipe is sized for two, but it is perfect to scale up and make in large batches to enjoy in front of the fire with friends.

  • 2 cups cider

  • 1 tablespoon loose leaf Darjeeling Tea

  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar

  • 2 teaspoons Pernod

  • 2 ounces Grand Marnier

  • 2 dashes Orange Bitters

Place the cider, tea leaves and brown sugar in a saucepan.  Bring to a boil, then reduce heat immediately.  Let simmer for 2 to 3 minutes and strain well.  Add the remaining ingredients and serve in 2 pre-warmed mugs or other glassware.
