A Brief History of Chai: From Spice Blends to Your Cup

Few beverages are as comforting as a warm cup of chai. With its fragrant spices and rich, inviting flavor, chai has a fascinating history that reaches back centuries.

The origins of chai are steeped in legend and tradition. Some archaeological evidence points to spice-based beverages dating back to the Bronze Age, while traditional accounts connect early spiced drinks with Ayurvedic practices. Stories also tell of these beverages being enjoyed in Indian and Southeast Asian courts and even playing a role in rituals surrounding peace treaties.

Interestingly, these early versions of chai may not have contained tea leaves at all. Tea became part of the story much later. During British colonial rule, the British East India Company worked to establish tea production in India in an effort to challenge China’s dominance of the tea trade. By the early 1900s, the Indian Tea Association was promoting tea breaks among workers in mills and factories, helping tea become an increasingly familiar part of everyday life.

Over time, tea leaves were combined with milk, sugar, and the aromatic spices that had long been part of Indian traditions. Countless regional and household variations developed, giving us the many forms of chai enjoyed today.

Chai at The Tea Smith

At The Tea Smith, we’re passionate about the quality of the ingredients that go into our chai blends. We love the way carefully balanced spices can complement the character of the tea and create a cup that’s both warming and inviting. From our Red Tiger Chai, a rooibos-based blend, to our Tulsi Chai, a black tea blend, we’ve crafted our chai selection to offer something for every tea lover.

And we’re especially excited about our newest blend: Green Caramel Apple Chai. This unique spiced tea combines bright green tea with fennel, cardamom, and cinnamon. The spices balance the vegetal notes of green tea while enhancing the sweetness of apple. The result is a chai that’s cozy and sweet, yet bright and refreshing.

It’s delicious served hot, but don’t stop there. Green Caramel Apple Chai is also fantastic iced, and a light splash of milk adds a creamy touch that complements the apple and spices beautifully. However you enjoy it, we hope our chai blends inspire you to slow down, share a cup, and enjoy a little conversation along the way.
