New to the world of Darjeeling? Here are a few things to know:

Darjeelings Only Come from the Darjeeling Region in India

In the same way that true champagne can only from the region with the same name in France, Darjeeling tea can only hail from one place–Darjeeling. If someone claims to be selling you Darjeeling tea from anywhere else, they may as well be selling you the Brooklyn Bridge!

Darjeelings Grow on Different Estates

Along the baseline of the Himalayan mountains in Western Bengal, India, you’ll find tea gardens that work year round to produce the best Darjeeling tea. Just like every vineyard yields different grapes that affect the final taste of a wine, each estate yields a variety of Darjeeling with its own distinct qualities. Trying Darjeelings from different estates is a great way to experience Darjeeling’s variety.

Different Flushes Yield Different Tastes

When it comes to Darjeeling tea, a “flush” refers to a growing season. Second flush Darjeelings, like the ones we mentioned above, typically grown from June to mid-August. However, weather patterns can alter the arrival and length of different flushes. Second flush teas are distinct for their amber color (darker than first flush Darjeelings) and “muscatel” flavor. Muscatel is a flavor that’s difficult to describe, but that’s often called brisk, bright and floral. Once you’ve tasted it, you can’t mistake it, so we encourage you to try it out for yourself!

Do you love Darjeeling? What’s your favorite kind of flush? How would you describe muscatel to someone who’s never tried it? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
