The Tea Smith Celebrates 20 Years!
One of the most common questions we get from new customers and employees is: How did The Tea Smith get started?
Tim Smith, owner and founder of The Tea Smith, admits that for most of his life, he thought tea was just “brown water in a bag.” But that all changed during a business trip. While searching for a gift for his wife—who isn’t a coffee drinker—he stumbled upon a shop selling loose-leaf tea. Intrigued, he brought some home, and together they discovered that tea is so much more than he had ever imagined.
As they explored new teas, learned about its rich history and culture, Tim became fascinated. Tea is the most consumed beverage in the world, yet at the time, specialty and loose-leaf teas were just starting to gain popularity in the U.S. Seeing an opportunity to combine their newfound passion with a growing market, Tim and his wife took the leap—and The Tea Smith was born.
Now, 20 years later, Tim reflects on the journey: “We’ve been drinking on the job ever since!”
